About Me

I am a Professor in the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. I studied philosophy at Davidson College, theology at Princeton Seminary, and social work at Columbia University.

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the fall of 2016, at the age of 48, and much of my current work relates to education, advocacy, and fundraising for Parkinson’s disease and broader health care and disability concerns.

My other research and writing interests have included brief counseling interventions, the psycho-social development of boys and men, mentoring, and social work and religion/spirituality.

I’m currently writing a memoir that recounts my experience of living with Parkinson’s. I’m also writing a book on an approach to brief counseling, which will be published by Oxford University Press.

I am grateful for your interest in my work.
